Malaysia Airlines global marketer Dean Dacko departs

Malaysia Airlines’ global marketing boss Dean Dacko is to leave the company, ending a turbulent three-year tenure at the company.

Former Air Canada and AIMIA executive Dacko joined Malaysia Airlines as senior vice president, head of marketing in 2012, and managed the brand’s response to the loss its MH370 and MH17 aircraft in 2014.

Dacko confirmed to M&M Global that he will be leaving Malaysia Airlines at the end of this month. He added that he is engaged in “several discussions” regarding his next appointment, and expects to confirm his plans “in the next few weeks”.

It is the latest leadership change at Malaysia Airlines, following the appointment of Christoph Mueller as chief executive late last year.

Last month, the brand recruited ex-Procter & Gamble, Kellogg’s and easyJet marketer Paul Simmons as chief commercial officer.

Dacko was a speaker at this year’s Festival of Media Asia and Festival of Media Global events, detailing how Malaysia Airlines dealt with the “body blow” of losing two aircraft.

Interviewed by M&M Global in April, Dacko vowed that the brand would bounce back from its annus horribilis “stronger, healthier and more capable of moving forward”.

“We never imaged we would be dealing with one incident, never mind two. The only way we managed to get through that was by leveraging the tools that we had built really for purely business purposes, as a transformation to a truly digital business,” he said.
