  • Life-stage targeting – the second generation

    18 December 2013

Life stages can have a significant impact on how people shop and, by tapping into online insights, advertisers can now pinpoint and target them more accurately than ever before says eBay Advertising’s Phuong Nguyen.

There are certain crossroads in life – from starting university, to becoming first-time parents, to retirement – that dramatically influence shopping behaviour and needs.

Fifteen years ago, when e-commerce was in its infancy, brands had to rely heavily on what they knew about their customer’s age and gender to drive life-stage marketing – 18-24 year olds, for example, would all be grouped as students. But things ...

  • Why smart content will change everything for brand marketers

    05 August 2013

We’re living in an era of ‘smart’, where digital amplifies everything. First came the smartphone, then smart  cars and smart TV – all are concepts we’re familiar with today but all were relatively unknown as recently as fifteen years ago. Now, it’s content’s turn to get a whole lot smarter.

With new technologies fuelling the evolution of e-commerce, we’re moving away from the old-guard e-commerce scenario, where people went online to search for items, to a new dawn where people discover and engage with items they can own throughout the course of their digital activities, whether it’s reading an article ...

  • Embracing the future of retail

    29 July 2013

The UK has fast become a nation of online shoppers, wrapped up in an e-commerce bubble that is showing no signs of bursting anytime soon. According to research by IMRG, Brits are the ‘largest internet economy’ in the world, with experts predicting that online sales will reach £87bn ($133bn) this year.

It has never been more important for both brands and retailers to embrace the opportunities presented by the rapidly expanding e-ommerce marketplace. To survive, let alone be successful, in this increasingly competitive industry, retailers must gain an in-depth understanding of online consumer purchasing habits as well as the multi-dimensional ...

  • What does the future of commerce look like?

    17 July 2013

Two words: content and commerce. Today it is a waste of time for the former not to directly result in the latter. Native advertising and content marketing are the talk of the town for brands and media owners, but it’s important to sit back and think about how the evolution of the online world is putting a greater focus on the importance of turning content into commerce.

These were all points addressed at this year’s Festival of Media Global 2013, which brought together a host of speakers from across the media landscape – ASOS, BuzzFeed, Unilever, Viacom and Visa to ...

  • Storytelling – transmedia style

    11 July 2013

For some reason it’s been a period when the phrases ‘omnichannel retailing’ and ‘transmedia storytelling’ have cropped up with alarming frequency in our conversations with partners and clients.

So what does this tell our content marketing team – apart from the fact that we have some new contender words for a game of bullshit bingo?

For those who aren’t familiar with the two phrases (and forgive me if it feels like I’m teaching grandma to suck eggs) here’s the briefest of brief run-downs.

Omnichannel retailing describes the way the virtual and real worlds of retailing are converging to ...

  • Infographic: Amazon vs Walmart

    03 July 2013

As part of the first in a series of 'Festival Intelligence Reports', I'm excited to share the team's first infographic. All of the content in the report focuses on this year's Festival of Media Global theme 'Content to Commerce', exploring the shift in consumer spending from bricks and mortar retail to online, as well as the perils, opportunities and evolution of turning content into commerce.

It seemed only fitting that we pit two of the world's biggest retail giants against each other head to head to see who comes out on top. Who will wear the ...

  • Mobile marketing trends from MWC 2013

    27 February 2013

Mobile World Congress has morphed from a telecoms sector-specific trade show in years past to an industry event that has implications for everything digital. From retail, music and entertainment to gaming and social networking, smartphones and tablets are ubiquitous and many are waiting to hear how the latest apps, handsets and periphery technology will improve their everyday lives. The retail sector in particular has benefited from advancements in the mobile technology, and here are three trends in the mobile shopping space causing a stir in 2013:

  • Sunny and disruptive: Outlook for retail industry in 2013

    15 January 2013

2012 has been a tough year for the high street, with retailers struggling to drive sales and many high street stores shutting their doors permanently. By contrast, the online high street saw resilient growth. In fact, the latest figures of the annual IMRG e-Retail Sales Index have revealed that online sales in November are up 18% from last year as the festive rush has encouraged consumers to reach into their digital pockets. So 2012 was a year of “Bricks vs. Clicks” but what will drive retail in 2013?

Here are some thought starters or perhaps predictions for 2013:

    The ...
